Diagnoses are arrived at by the SVMHI psychiatrist’s through observation of the patient during a psychiatric evaluation as well as past history, interviews with the patient’s family members, psychological tests and information contained in other documents from other mental health service providers who have treated the patient. The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition (ICD-10), and The Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Diseases Fifth Edition (DSM-5) are the required and accepted references to establish diagnoses after such interview, gathering of information, and assessments. At present, approximately 46% of our patients are admitted for treatment of psychotic disorders (Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective, etc..); 18% of our patients are admitted for Mood disorders (Depression, Bipolar, Dysthymia. etc..); 22% are treated for Adjustment disorders (other & unspecified non-psychotic disorders); and 10% for alcohol and/or substance abuse disorders.
