CSB Linkage/Process

For referral purposes, all individuals seeking treatment services must contact their local Community Services Board (CSB). CSBs enable individuals with mental disabilities or substance abuse problems to access services in state mental health facilities through pre-admission screening, case management, and client services management.

Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolescents (CCCA), operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, has 48 acute inpatient psychiatric hospital beds for Virginians who are under 18 years of age located in Staunton, Virginia and serves the entire Commonwealth. CCCA serves as the safety net for youth who require acute inpatient psychiatric care and cannot be admitted to any other child/adolescent psychiatric hospital in Virginia. All referrals meeting criteria under a Temporary Detention Order are accepted for admission after prescreening by the Community Services Board, have medical clearance, and if no appropriate alternative placements are available.

The high volume of admissions and a short Length-of-Stay (LOS) for children at CCCA (typically less than 7 days) intensifies the need for active and effective bed management. Inpatient treatment includes the clinical aspects of care and effective discharge planning not only at the facility level with patients and families but in collaboration with community partners including private hospitals, departments of social services, juvenile detention and correctional centers and community services boards (CSBs).
