Navid Rashid, M.D., FAPA
Medical Director
Dr. Rashid completed the combined 7 year BA/ MD program at The George Washington University, followed by Psychiatry residency at the University of Illinois-Chicago during which he was named a chief resident, and after graduation went on to complete a fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine through Georgetown University/ Inova Fairfax Hospital. He is board certified in Psychiatry and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Rashid has dedicated his career to public sector inpatient psychiatry, with nearly a decade as a staff psychiatrist at NVMHI before being named Medical Director. He has been recognized as an educator by The George Washington University, twice receiving the Clinical Faculty Award for his work with psychiatric residents, and the recipient of the prestigious Elaine W. Cotlove MD Award for Excellence in Psychiatric Education in 2013. He continues to teach at NVMHI, and is also an active teaching faculty in the Psychosomatic Medicine fellowship through Inova Fairfax Hospital. He is recognized as a recovery-oriented psychiatrist in the Northern Virginia region and has consulted to the Virginia Recovery Initiative. As Medical Director at NVMHI, Dr. Rashid is committed to the mission of NVMHI, and works to provide clinical leadership that promotes an understanding of patients encompassing biological, psychological, social and spiritual perspectives. He believes in a balanced and integrated approach to the diagnosis and treatment of serious mental illness that is humanistic, scientific, and ultimately based in caring and service.
Irene Green, AGACNP-BC, MSN
Irene is a graduate of Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has practiced as a Registered Nurse for over 20 years, and received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from St. Mary of the Plains College. She has since received her Masters of Science degree and is licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Gerontology Acute Care. Irene has experience working on both the medical side of patient care as well as psychiatric; however, serving the mentally ill and under-served in our community has become her passion.
Neda Kovacevic, MD
Dr. Kovacevic completed her medical training at the University of Belgrade School of Medicine in Serbia. Upon graduation, Dr. Kovacevic worked as a primary care provider at a psychiatric hospital in Belgrade. This assignment led her to pursue her interest, bringing her to the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA where Dr. Kovacevic completed her training in psychiatry. Dr. Kovacevic served as a Chief Resident in her final year and spent 6 months as a junior attending psychiatrist on the consultation-liaison service. Upon graduation from her psychiatry residency, Dr. Kovacevic moved to the DC area to complete a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry/ Psychosomatic Medicine with the George Washington University. Through her residency, fellowship, and as an attending physician at NVMHI, Dr. Kovacevic has remained actively involved in teaching medical, NP and PA students as well as psychiatry residents, and is currently an instructor in psychiatry for VCU, and SABA School of Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at GWU. Dr. Kovacevic is board certified in General Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
Shah Nadeem, MD
Dr. Shah Nadeem completed his medical training from Sindh Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan. After medical school, Dr. Nadeem worked in internal medicine for nearly a decade before moving to a new career in psychiatry. He completed his residency in General Psychiatry from Metropolitan Hospital Center, New York Medical College, followed by a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry from North Shore LIJ University Hospital Center. Upon completion of his Fellowship, Dr. Nadeem was employed by the Veteran’s Affairs Administration for six years, and served as Chief of Psychiatry the last four years. Dr. Nadeem believes that psychiatry is a field where he can make a remarkable difference in the quality of people’s lives. Dr. Nadeem feels that patients with addictions are an underserved population who require a high level of care. His treatment philosophy is centered on helping patients achieve their goals and become a productive member in the community. Dr. Nadeem is passionate about mentorship for future healthcare professionals, earning the Excellence in Teaching Award from George Washington University in 2016-2017.
Sumera Nadeem, MD
Dr. Sumera Nadeem is a board certified psychiatrist with over a decade of practice in the Northern Virginia area. Dr. Sumera complemented her medical education and Psychiatry residency training with a Masters of Public Health from The George Washington University. With her experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, Dr. Nadeem approaches diagnostic evaluations and psychiatric treatment with an emphasis on building strong therapeutic relationships, coupled with up-to-date knowledge of current clinical practice. Her primary focus and experience has been working in public sector psychiatry, including- extensive experience working for the Community Services Board, in addition to her current work at NVMHI. She also has an interest in women’s mental health. Dr Nadeem makes every effort to ensure her patients are given the best available treatment in an empathic environment, and endeavors to approach her work with compassion and understanding.
Jyoti Supanekar, MD
Dr. Supanekar completed her Psychiatry residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. She is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology. Dr. Supanekar has dedicated her career to public sector and community psychiatry practice for over a decade, and worked at the Prince William Community Services Board for nine years prior to joining NVMHI. She has also previously been involved in research work at the National Institutes of Health and Washington Hospital Center, pursuing interests in neuroscience and psychiatry. Dr. Supanekar believes in a holistic, person-centered approach to mental health care which emphasizes hope, that it is possible for people with mental illness to regain a meaningful life, and that recovery is a process which is attainable with an appropriate support framework in place.
Omer Haroon, MD
Dr. Haroon completed his residency training in New York City, working at multiple sites including Creedmoor Psychiatric Center and Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He served as chief resident in his final year, and received the Conrad Apgar Herr Resident of the Year Award. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology. After graduation he joined Albany Medical Center where he wore multiple hats; he was both an inpatient and consultation-liaison psychiatrist for the busiest Level 1 Trauma Center in New York State, while also being heavily involved in medical education as Assistant Professor. He served as Behavioral Science Theme Leader and as Associate Clerkship Director at Albany Medical College. He was a member of the Association of Directors in Medical Student Education in Psychiatry and was the recipient of the Department of Psychiatry Chairman’s Award in 2018.Following his time in Albany, Dr. Haroon served as Unit Chief of the adult inpatient psychiatric unit at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. More recently, Dr. Haroon joined Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute where he appreciates the multidisciplinary approach towards treating patients. He enjoys engaging in stimulating discussions with his team, which includes medical students and psychiatry residents from George Washington University School of Medicine where he holds the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor.
Primary Care
Cecilia Chukwu, MD, FACP
Dr. Chukwu completed her medical training with an Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Howard University Hospital, Washington DC. She then did a Fellowship in Geriatrics at the George Washington University Hospital, Washington DC. Dr. Chukwu remained with the George Washington Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Medicine until she subsequently joined NVMHI. She has been active on the committees of Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI), including the Medical Executive Committee. She has been elected and remains the Vice-Chair of the Virginia Chapter of The American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, which helps to provide clinical care to individuals with intellectual disabilities and neuropsychiatric presentations. Dr. Chukwu believes in comprehensive medical care of patients at NVMHI and in general, through evidence-based medicine. Dr. Chukwu is board certified in internal medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Narges Ghodsimaab, DNP, FNP-BC
Narges Ghodimaab completed the nurse practitioner (FNP) program and obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from George Mason University. She is board certified in family practice by the American Nursing Credentialing Center. Prior to joining NVMHI, Narges worked in both primary and acute care settings for over three years. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, Narges attended George Mason University and obtained her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and worked as a registered nurse at both Fairfax and Loudoun hospitals for over seven years. Narges is also a certified midwife overseas and worked in that role for over eight years. Narges believes in patient centered care and focuses on providing quality care to patients.
Sajjad Hussain, MD
Dr. Hussain is a board certified Internal Medicine physician. He completed medical school in the West Indies, followed by surgical internship training and an Internal Medicine residency at Nassau University Medical Center in New York. Dr. Hussain subsequently completed his fellowship training in Geriatric Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He worked as an attending physician at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, Ann Arbor Michigan, before joining NVMHI, and has over ten years of experience in primary care practice. At NVMHI, Dr. Hussain collaborates with our psychiatric staff to provide integrated care in the context of a psychiatric hospital, so that necessary medical issues are addressed alongside psychiatric treatment.
