The Dental Program is a gap service funded through the general assembly.

Dental Program Mission
The Dental Program’s mission is to provide dental evaluation, education, exams, and treatment to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who do not have access to basic dental care.

Dental Team Program Goals

  • Community Integration
  • Train Providers
  • Equal Access to Care
  • Fluoride Treatment
  • Revise Care Models to Individualized Care & Needs
  • No Restraints
  • No Unnecessary Sedation

Basic Dentistry
Preventative Care & Basic Dentistry Services

  • Initial consultation and evaluation
  • Cleanings (2 per year)
  • Fluoride treatment
  • X-rays
  • Basic fillings

Sedation Dentistry
Same Services as Basic Dentistry

The Mobile Unit
To assist individuals living in more rural communities within the Commonwealth, the OIH Dental team took the program to the road! The mobile unit is a rolling dental office equipped to provide exams, x-rays, cleanings and basic fillings with tele-dentist oversight capabilities to serve individuals without the ability to get in a dentist office.
Services we offer in our program:

  • Exams
  • X-rays
  • Cleanings
  • Basic fillings
  • Fluoride application
  • Sealant application
  • Oral health education

Current Program Criteria

  • The individual must have a diagnosis of intellectual or developmental disability as defined by the VA Code.
  • Must be 21 years and older.
  • The individual has not been able to secure dental services within the last year.
  • The individual is in need of dental services.

Services To Those Who Do Not Meet Criteria

  • The individual must have a diagnosis of intellectual or developmental disability as defined by the VA Code.
  • Must be 21 years and older.
  • The individual has not been able to secure dental services within the last year.
  • The individual is in need of dental services.

Program Disqualification

  • Noncompliance with appointments (no show, repeated cancellations, etc.).
  • Failure to submit medical clearance, if required.
  • If the individual/caregivers refuse the referral which is available to them.
  • The individual has the ability to receive care in a community practice.
    • The OIHSN Dental Program and the funding behind it is to increase community accessibility, not to provide free dentistry. The patients who have existing dental providers should continue with those practices.

Dental Referral Process

  • Referrals must come from the individual’s CSB Representative from the associated Community Services Board.
  • Referral forms must be filled out utilizing the Online Dental Referral Form. See below for more instructions.
  • Once referrals are received, it will be reviewed and processed to determine if the individual meets the criteria for the program.
  • A screening will be scheduled and completed in order to determine the type of dentistry appropriate for the individual.
