REVIVE! Training Information

Trainers may hold private and public virtual and in person trainings. We ask that each time you lead a training you must complete the REVIVE! Trainer’s Report Survey.

First Responders are strongly encouraged to take the REVIVE! First Responders Training.

Those who are First Responders Trainers may facilitate the basic REVIVE! Lay Rescuer and Training of Trainers training. However, basic trainers may not train First Responders.

The following organizations qualify for no-cost naloxone:

• Public K-12 schools
• Community Services Boards (CSBs)
• Local Health Departments (LHDs)
• Comprehensive harm reduction programs
• Law enforcement
• EMS
• Fire departments

If you are not included in this list, you can apply to be a Naloxone Partner or apply for a Naloxone Agreement with the Virginia Department of Health.

While there is no age limit to receive REVIVE! Training, some agencies and schools may require a parent/guardian’s permission.

To obtain or dispense naloxone, you Must be 18 years old or older. If an individual is under the age of 18, they will need parent/guardian permission to obtain or dispense Naloxone.

A REVIVE! Kit includes:

• 2 pairs of latex-free gloves
• A REVIVE! instruction card
• 2 CPR shields
• A REVIVE! completion card
• (Naloxone is not included in the REVIVE! Kits)

Naloxone is not included in REVIVE! Kits. Anyone can access naloxone by:

• Get a prescription from a doctor
• Use the standing order written for the public
• Go to Virginia’s Local Health Departments and some Community Services Boards at no cost.
• Please call your local agency to check for availability.
• Visit the Community Services Boards website.
• Request Naloxone and/or test strips for your organization through the Virginia Department of Health.
• Participate in Comprehensive Harm Reduction programs.
• View the Comprehensive Harm Reduction programs.

To sign-up for and attend an in-person training, contact your local Community Service Board (CSB) or your Local Health Department (LHD) to inquire about in-person trainings.

REVIVE! Kits are available for request. Please do not send an email request for kits.

Due to a supply chain issue, we do not have any REVIVE! Kits at this time. We are working to receive more and will announce when more REVIVE! Kits become available.

DBHDS must approve, verify, and finalize all REVIVE! trainings in order to ensure appropriate oversight, policy compliance, and program efficacy.

Lay Rescuer Training

This training is between 1 and 1.5 hours long and covers:

• How to respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone.
• Understanding opioids
• How opioid overdoses happen
• Risk factors for opioid overdoses
• How to respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone.

Trainer of Lay Rescuers Training (TLR)

This training is 1 hour long and includes:

• additional training that prepares you to become a REVIVE! instructor, including the administrative requirements to lead REVIVE! Trainings.

After completing the TLR training, you will receive a follow-up email including:

• A link to the Training agreement
• Training materials
• Instructions on how to order kits and request a certificate

Upon receiving this email, please READ and SUBMIT the training agreement. This agreement must be submitted before an individual facilitates trainings and orders kits. Use the link provided to request your Certificate of Completion.

Please allow up to 30 days to receive your certificate, after the date of the request.

If you do not receive a follow-up email, please reach out to your trainer.

To become a Master Trainer, you must be a certified trainer for at least six months and have led at least 12 full REVIVE! Lay Rescuer Trainings. A member of the REVIVE! Team will provide a Master Trainer Training once per quarter.

A Trainer of Lay Rescuers (TLR) who has met the above requirements and is interested in becoming a Master Trainer, should reach out the revive@dbhds.virginia.gov to schedule for the Master Trainer Training.

Yes, we encourage all trainers to take the TOT every two years to stay up to date with any changes and updates.

New training agreements were sent out to all trainers in August of 2022. If you didn’t receive the email and didn’t sign the agreement, you must participate in our Virtual TOT or attend any other Master Trainer’s TOT to sign agreement.

The REVIVE! Team received hundreds of training verifications per month. The trainings are sorted through to ensure validity of each Trainer’s status, and then then the certificates for each participant are generated and delivered via email.

Please allow up to ten (10) business days before inquiring about your certificate.

If you have not received your certificate, please check with your Trainer to ensure that they have submitted the attendance roster to DBHDS for review and verification.

If you have submitted a certificate request with a training date from more than 2 years ago, you will not receive a certificate.

If an attendance roster has been submitted and the Trainer is not verified in our system (the Trainer does not have a training agreement on file), you will not receive a certificate.

Please refer to the REVIVE! website regularly to find updates and changes.

It is important to attend the REVIVE! Trainers scheduled meetings (May and November). If you have not received an invitation to these meetings and you would like to participate, please email revive@dbhds.virginia.gov.

The bi-annual REVIVE! Newsletter (January and July) is also available to aid in keeping trainers up to date and informed.

If you do not have a Training agreement signed, you are not in our system as a Trainer and won’t receive updates.

We want to ensure that only those who have been properly trained to teach REVIVE! are in the database as trainers.

Placing this document on the REVIVE! website gives access to those who haven’t been properly trained and may not be able to deliver materials effectively.

The training agreement is important because it outlines the expectations for trainers. Signing it means you understand the guidelines for becoming a trainer. Many common questions are addressed in the agreement, which also helps prevent the loss of training privileges.

DBHDS has limited access to OTC Narcan. You may find additional information from the Virginia Department of Health.
