Mobile Rehab Engineering

The Mobile Rehab Engineering (MRE) Team is a gap service that is funded through the General Assembly. The MRE Team includes Rehabilitation Engineers, Rehabilitation Technicians, Registered Nurse Care Consultants (RNCC), a Physical Therapist (PT) and consultation with Occupational Therapist (OT), as needed. The MRE Team now provides services throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

MRE Mission Statement

The MRE Team’s mission is to provide durable medical equipment (DME) maintenance and repair services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who don’t have these services currently available elsewhere.

Program Goals

  • To reduce risk of bodily injuries due to durable medical equipment (DME) failure.
  • Promote and support community integration.
  • Promote and sustain safe use of all DME.
  • Provide equal access to DME repair and cleaning services.
  • Educate caregivers on the proper care of DME.
  • Educate caregivers regarding the process of obtaining new DME.

Current Program Criteria

  • The individual must have an intellectual or developmental disability as defined by the Virginia Code.
  • The individual has not been able to secure durable medical equipment (DME) repair and/or cleaning services from a vendor.
  • The individual is in need of a customized adaptation.

MRE Services

  • Safety assessments, repairs and pressure washing of durable medical equipment (DME).
  • Assessment and construction of custom adaptations.

MRE Repair Services

  • The MRE Team will repair all makes and models of wheelchairs (electric and manual).
  • The MRE Team can replace or repair parts on the following equipment:
    • Wheelchairs
    • Walkers
    • Rollators
    • Shower chairs
    • Stander
    • Toileting chairs
    • Patient lifts
    • Hospital beds
    • Canes
    • Helmets
    • Hand orthotics/splits
    • Ambulatory foot orthotics

MRE Pressure Washing

  • The MRE Team will provide pressure washing of DME between the months of March and October.
  • Weather dependent (unable to pressure wash in rain, high winds, etc.)
  • All washable DME.
  • Site needs to be a level area for equipment set-up with an outside spigot.
  • Hot water only – no detergents.
  • The MRE Team voluntarily complies with Virginia’s Clean Water Act.

Custom Adaptations

The MRE Team will assess the individual’s needs and determine if they are a candidate for a custom adaptation.

  • To Request MRE Services to include Safety Assessments, Power Washing, Repairs, Clinics and/or PT/OT/Wound Care Consult please fill out the form below that best fits your request and submit to MRETeam@dbhds.virginia.gov. This form must be filled out in its entirety and returned to the email address supplied unless prior arrangements have been made with the MRE Team.
  • Upon processing your request, a member of our MRE Team will contact you to schedule or discuss next steps.
